Leaked images are painting a picture of Google’s upcoming smart home refresh, and the word is: evolution, not revolution. Think of it as the “Pixel 10” approach to your Nest devices – subtle exterior tweaks paired with a significant boost in internal power and intelligence.
Google’s been hinting at its ambition to weave Gemini, its advanced AI, into the fabric of our homes, and this new lineup seems to be the hardware backbone for that vision. The big reveal during the Pixel 10 launch event teased a new smart speaker, and thanks to Android Headlines, we now have a much clearer picture of it.
Familiar Forms, Sharper Eyes:
The cameras and doorbell maintain the designs we know, but pack a punch under the hood. Think enhanced resolution: goodbye 1080p, hello crisp 2K recordings for all new Nest devices equipped with cameras. Color palettes are also getting a refresh, with the Nest Cam Indoor sporting options like “Snow” (white), “Berry” (red), and “Hazel” (gray). You’ll even be able to “Zoom and Crop” your camera feed for laser-focused monitoring and enjoy an hour of local video storage for those inevitable Wi-Fi hiccups. Plus, Google is tripling the length of video preview clips from one hour to three, making it easier to catch those quick moments you might have missed.
The Nest Cam Outdoor and Nest Doorbell get similar upgrades, with the Outdoor model available in “Snow” and “Hazel” and the Doorbell adding a “Linen” (beige) option to the mix.
A New Voice in the Home: The Google Home Speaker
While the rest of the lineup focuses on internal enhancements, the leaked images unveil a brand-new smart speaker, potentially christened the Google Home Speaker. This compact, rounded device appears to be a more refined replacement for the Nest Mini, promising “360-degree sound” and a vibrant range of colors – red, light green, black, and beige all seem to be in the mix.
Android Headlines reports support for Gemini Live, enabling real-time AI assistance, as well as Sound Sensing, which could alert you to smoke alarms or breaking glass. And naturally, it will seamlessly integrate with your Google TV streamer.
Subscription Shake-Up: Hello Google Home Premium
Alongside the hardware refresh, Google is also reportedly rebranding its Nest Aware subscription service. Expect to see the entry-level plan re-emerge as Google Home Premium, with a more advanced Google Home Premium Advanced option also on the horizon. What exactly these tiers will offer, and whether certain Gemini features will be locked behind the higher-priced plan, remains a mystery for now.
The Gemini Promise Awaits:
With Google promising to unleash Gemini for Home in October, we’re likely to hear more official announcements in the coming months. This isn’t just about new gadgets; it’s about a more intelligent, responsive, and helpful smart home experience.
